Description

The Raymarine Quantum 2 Q24D is an 18-inch-class solid-state CHIRP pulse-compression radar designed to deliver useful short-range target separation and up to 24 nautical miles of range without a high-power magnetron. This package includes both a 10 m power cable and a 10 m RayNet data cable, so it can be hard-wired to a compatible Raymarine display while retaining Wi-Fi radar connectivity. Quantum 2 adds Doppler target processing to make moving traffic easier to interpret at a glance.

Main Features

  • Solid-state CHIRP pulse-compression radar with 20 W peak transmitter power and no magnetron warm-up delay.
  • Up to 24 NM range with excellent close-in performance, including range scales down to 1/16 NM for harbour and docking awareness.
  • RayNet Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity for flexible installation with compatible Axiom and Element systems.
  • Compact 18-inch-class radome measuring 541 mm in diameter and weighing 5.6 kg, suitable for many mast, arch and hardtop installations.
  • Doppler moving-target processing highlights closing and diverging targets to reduce interpretation workload in traffic.

Solid-state pulse-compression performance

Quantum uses CHIRP pulse-compression processing rather than a traditional high-power magnetron. The solid-state transmitter can produce a detailed picture at very short range while still providing useful coastal and offshore coverage. Raymarine specifies selectable range scales from 1/16 NM through 24 NM. This combination is valuable when the same radar must help with close harbour navigation, buoy identification, rain squalls and traffic farther offshore.

Antenna and target resolution

The Q24 radome uses a patch-array antenna with a nominal horizontal beamwidth of 4.9° and vertical beamwidth of 20°. Rotation speed is nominally 24 rpm. The relatively narrow horizontal beam helps separate nearby targets, while the wide vertical beam is intended to maintain useful coverage as the vessel pitches and rolls. Correct mounting height and a clear view around the scanner are still important for maximizing performance.

Doppler collision awareness

Quantum 2 adds Doppler processing to measure the relative motion of radar returns. Raymarine’s MotionScope presentation can colour-code moving targets so the operator can distinguish traffic approaching the vessel from traffic moving away. When combined with compatible heading data and the display’s MARPA/target-tracking functions, this reduces the time required to interpret a busy radar scene. Doppler does not replace watchkeeping or collision-regulation responsibilities, but it is a useful prioritization tool.

RayNet and Wi-Fi integration

The scanner supports both wired RayNet Ethernet and Wi-Fi radar connections. A hard-wired RayNet link is generally preferred when cabling is practical because it creates a dedicated physical data path. Wi-Fi can simplify retrofits where routing a new data cable is difficult. Element displays can use compatible Quantum radar over Wi-Fi because Element does not provide a RayNet Ethernet connection; Axiom-series displays can use supported wired or wireless arrangements.

Power and installation

The radar accepts nominal 12 V or 24 V DC and operates from approximately 10.8–31.2 V DC. Raymarine lists maximum transmit consumption at about 17 W, standby at 7 W and Wi-Fi sleep mode at about 2 W. The radome is 541 mm (21.3 in) in diameter, 209.5 mm (8.25 in) high and weighs 5.6 kg (12.35 lb). It is rated IPX6, operates from -10°C to +55°C and is specified for wind speeds up to 100 knots. The mounting surface must be rigid and positioned to minimize shadowing from masts, lights and metal structures.

Compatible display planning

Quantum integrates directly with current Axiom 2 Pro, Axiom+, Axiom and Element families, with connection method depending on the display generation. For radar overlay and the strongest target-tracking performance, the network should also have accurate heading data from a compatible sensor such as EV-1, AR200 or another approved heading source. AIS is complementary rather than a substitute: combining radar and AIS gives the operator two independent ways to assess traffic.
