Description
The Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic Autopilot with GHC 50 is designed for powerboats with hydraulic steering. It combines Garmin’s Reactor 40 course-keeping system, GHC 50 touchscreen autopilot instrument, Shadow Drive technology and the electronic control components required to operate a compatible hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump is not included in this package and must be selected to match the boat’s steering-cylinder volume and steering configuration.

Hydraulic Steering Compatibility
This package is intended for hydraulic steering systems but does not include the hydraulic pump. Garmin pairs this core system with different pump sizes depending on steering-cylinder displacement. The 1.2-liter pump is commonly used for lower-volume single-cylinder applications, while the 2.0-liter pump is intended for larger total cylinder volumes. Steering type, total cylinder volume, power-assist configuration and vessel use must be checked before choosing a pump.
GHC 50 and Chartplotter Integration
The included GHC 50 provides a dedicated touchscreen for engaging or placing the autopilot in standby, changing heading and accessing supported steering patterns. Through NMEA 2000, compatible Garmin chartplotters can also exchange navigation and heading information with the autopilot.
Installation and Commissioning
Autopilot installation directly affects steering performance and safety. Hydraulic plumbing, pump sizing, electrical protection, heading-sensor placement and dockside/sea-trial commissioning should all follow Garmin’s instructions. An autopilot does not replace the operator or a proper lookout.
