Description

The FURUNO 165T-B54 is the bronze through-hull multibeam transducer designed for Furuno’s DFF3D multibeam sonar. Instead of transmitting a single narrow fish-finder beam, it provides a broad 120° port-to-starboard acoustic view at 165 kHz so the DFF3D can build cross-sectional, triple-beam and 3D-style underwater presentations. A built-in motion sensor stabilizes the sonar picture, and an integrated temperature sensor adds useful water-temperature data.

  • 120° multibeam coverage: Provides a wide port-to-starboard view that lets the DFF3D examine structure and targets beyond the narrow cone of a conventional single-beam transducer.
  • 165 kHz DFF3D operation: Purpose-built frequency and array design work with Furuno’s multibeam sonar processing.
  • Built-in motion sensor: Supplies stabilization data so vessel movement can be compensated for in the DFF3D presentation.
  • Bronze through-hull with high-speed fairing: Heavy-duty housing and streamlined fairing support serious offshore installations and cleaner water flow at speed.
  • Dual 10 m cable arrangement: Separate cable paths serve the DFF3D sonar connection and the motion-sensor interface.

Why Multibeam Is Different

A traditional fish finder shows echoes within one or two beam cones directly below the boat. The 165T-B54/DFF3D system spreads acoustic coverage across 120 degrees from port to starboard, giving the operator information about bottom shape and targets off to the sides. This can be extremely useful when searching a reef edge, wreck, ledge or bait school because the boat does not have to pass directly over every target to detect it.

DFF3D Presentation Modes

With the DFF3D network sounder and compatible Furuno MFD, the multibeam data can be processed into several useful presentations. Cross-section views show the bottom profile across the vessel, triple/single-beam modes help compare returns in different directions, and 3D history-style displays can reveal the shape of bottom structure over the vessel’s track. The transducer is therefore part of a complete sonar system rather than a stand-alone depth sensor.

Built-In Motion Stabilization

Roll and pitch can distort a wide multibeam picture if the system does not know how the boat is moving. The 165T-B54 includes a motion sensor specifically so the DFF3D can stabilize the displayed image. This reduces the apparent movement of bottom and targets as the boat rolls, giving a more useful picture offshore.

High-Speed Fairing and Hull Geometry

The standard installation uses a high-speed fairing block. The fairing is cut for hull deadrise so the transducer array is aligned correctly and so water flows smoothly around the housing. Furuno also notes that the B54 can be flush-mounted into a suitable keel arrangement without the fairing, but that is a specialized installation requiring careful structural and acoustic planning.

Two 10-Metre Cables

The 165T-B54 uses two separate 10 m cables: a bare-ended sonar cable for the DFF3D transceiver and a 7-pin cable for the motion-sensor connection. Cable routes should be planned before the hull is drilled, with adequate separation from noise sources and enough service access at the transceiver. Furuno offers an approved 10 m extension kit when the standard cable length is not sufficient.

Temperature Sensor

A built-in water-temperature sensor provides another useful fishing data point. Temperature breaks often define productive water, and integrating the temperature measurement into the same housing avoids an additional sensor on the hull. The B54 does not include a paddlewheel speed sensor.
