Description

The FURUNO RD33 is a 4.3-inch colour navigation data display and data organizer for boats that need important information visible independently of the main chartplotter. It accepts both NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 data, allowing it to show information from GPS, instruments, radar, fish finders, autopilots, smart sensors and selected engine sources. The display can be customized extensively, so it works equally well as a dedicated speed/depth instrument, a secondary navigation display or a bridge between old and new data networks.

  • 4.3-inch high-contrast colour LCD: Compact display presents navigation and instrument data in large numerical or graphical formats.
  • NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183: Accepts data from both modern CAN-bus and legacy serial equipment, making it valuable in mixed-generation refits.
  • Highly customizable layouts: Supports large-number, gauge, highway, speedometer, text and split-screen arrangements with up to six data segments.
  • Seven saved display configurations: Store multiple page layouts for different operating conditions and recall them quickly.
  • Data-organizer / conversion role: Can receive and retransmit supported data, helping bridge selected NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 information in the vessel system.

A Dedicated Display for the Data You Actually Watch

Modern MFDs can show hundreds of data fields, but that does not mean every piece of information belongs on the main navigation screen. The RD33 lets the skipper move high-priority values—speed, depth, heading, wind, waypoint information, engine data or other supported parameters—to a separate display that remains visible regardless of what the chartplotter is doing.

Custom Pages Instead of a Fixed Instrument

The RD33 is not limited to one factory layout. Data can be shown as large numbers, traditional-style gauges, navigation graphics or split into multiple segments. The text mode can display several values simultaneously, while graphical pages such as Highway or Speedometer provide a more visual presentation. Seven custom configurations can be stored, so a boat can have separate pages for cruising, docking, fishing, engine monitoring or night operation.

NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 on One Display

This dual-interface capability is one of the RD33’s strongest features. A refit may include a modern NMEA 2000 heading sensor and engine gateway alongside older NMEA 0183 GPS or instrument equipment. The RD33 can receive information from both systems and, for supported data, help move information between them. That can reduce the number of separate converters required, although the exact sentences and PGNs needed for a particular installation should always be verified.

Use with Smart Sensors

Furuno supports a range of NMEA 2000 smart sensors for depth, speed and temperature, and these can feed the RD33 directly through the backbone. This allows the display to become a compact instrument system without requiring a dedicated instrument processor. The supplied 6 m NMEA 2000 cable simplifies connection to an existing backbone.

Secondary Station and Redundancy

The RD33 is useful at a lower helm, flybridge, chart table or other position where a full MFD would be unnecessary. Because it can show basic navigation data independently of the main display, it can also provide useful redundancy when the MFD is occupied with radar or sonar. It is not itself a chartplotter and does not contain detailed cartography.

Installation and Network Design

The display operates from 12–24 VDC and should be connected according to Furuno’s NMEA 2000 installation practice. When using both NMEA standards, define data sources carefully to avoid loops or duplicate information. If the RD33 is replacing an older RD30, Furuno provides specific interfacing guidance because existing NMEA 0183 smart-sensor wiring may need to be adapted.
