Description
The FURUNO MCU-004 is a compact hardware remote control designed to bring tactile operation to compatible NavNet TZtouch and TZtouch2 displays. Its large rotary controller incorporates joystick movement and push-to-select operation, giving the skipper a stable physical control point when sea conditions make touchscreen-only operation less convenient. It is especially useful at a helm chair, secondary operating position or installation where a display is mounted slightly beyond comfortable touch reach.

Why Physical Control Still Matters
Multi-touch displays are intuitive in calm water, but a bouncing boat can make precise taps and swipes difficult. A rotary/joystick controller gives the operator something to brace against and manipulate by feel. That can be particularly helpful when zooming a chart, moving a radar cursor, selecting menu items or operating the system in rain and rough conditions.
Large Rotary / Joystick Control
The MCU-004’s primary control combines rotation, directional joystick movement and push selection. This mirrors common actions on the connected MFD: turn to move through values or menus, move the joystick to position a cursor or pan, and press to confirm. The goal is not to duplicate every touch gesture but to cover the high-frequency helm actions that benefit most from a physical control.
Compatibility Is Generation-Specific
The MCU-004 predates the newer MCU006 family and should not be assumed to control every current Furuno MFD. Furuno’s original documentation lists NavNet TZtouch models TZT9, TZT14 and TZTBB, as well as TZtouch2 TZTL12F and TZTL15F. Later Furuno system documentation also shows MCU-004 in selected NavNet architectures, but exact operation depends on display generation and software. Confirm compatibility before cutting the panel.
USB Connection and Power
The unit connects through USB 2.0 using a 3 m interface cable and draws its operating power from USB. This simplifies electrical installation because a separate DC power circuit is not required for the remote itself. Cable routing still needs to protect the USB connector and rear of the controller from water, strain and service damage.
Environmental and Mounting Details
Furuno rates the front of the MCU-004 to IP56 and the rear to IP22, which makes panel sealing and rear protection important. The front can tolerate a marine helm environment when correctly installed, but the backside should remain in a protected console. Furuno specifies an operating temperature range of approximately -15°C to +55°C and front flush mounting.
