Description
The FURUNO MCU-005 is a full keyboard-style remote controller for compatible NavNet TZtouch2, TZtouch3 and TZtouchXL systems. It is intended for operators who prefer dedicated physical keys, a rotary control and direct command access rather than relying entirely on touchscreen gestures. On larger wheelhouses, commercial-style helms or seated captain’s-chair installations, the MCU-005 can make a multi-display Furuno system much easier to operate in rough water.

A Control Surface for Multi-Display Helms
Large glass-bridge installations often place several displays in front of the operator. Reaching across each screen is not always comfortable, particularly from a helm chair. The MCU-005 brings core system control to one physical location, allowing the operator to select and manipulate functions while keeping attention on the displays rather than the touch interface.
Touchscreen Plus Hardware, Not Touchscreen Replacement
The MCU-005 complements the NavNet touch interface. Some tasks are faster by touch, such as dragging a chart or selecting an on-screen object; others are more reliable with a key or rotary control when the boat is moving. A well-designed Furuno helm can use both methods depending on conditions.
Generation Compatibility
Furuno specifically lists the MCU-005 for NavNet TZtouch2, TZtouch3 and TZtouchXL. It is not for the original NavNet TZtouch or NavNet 3D platform. Because software and system topology can affect remote operation, confirm the exact MFD models and software versions when adding the keyboard to an existing installation.
Refit and Conversion Considerations
Furuno lists an MCU001-to-MCU005 conversion kit and associated software/accessories for selected legacy installations. This can be useful when a vessel already has a remote-controller cutout and the main MFDs are being upgraded. Before relying on a conversion kit, verify the original controller, panel dimensions, cable route and target NavNet generation.
Installation Planning
Place the keyboard where the operator can use the rotary control and major keys without leaning forward or taking eyes off the primary display for long periods. On a chair-arm installation, confirm the mount can carry repeated hand pressure. On a flat console, allow enough depth for connectors and cable bend radius. Although the controller is designed for marine electronics, follow Furuno’s installation guidance for water protection and grounding.
