Description
The FURUNO TZMAP9 is an all-in-one stand-alone multi-function display for boaters who want premium Furuno charting, radar compatibility and serious fish-finding capability without building a multi-display NavNet system. Its design combines TZ MAPS charting, an internal GNSS/WAAS receiver, a built-in 300 W/600 W/1 kW TruEcho CHIRP or conventional CW fish finder, and a dedicated CHIRP Side-Scan connection in a single display. The result is a particularly strong fit for centre consoles, pilothouse boats, fishing boats and cruisers that will be operated primarily from one navigation display but still need much of the functionality normally associated with a more elaborate helm.
- 9-inch high-brightness multi-touch display: The compact HD panel is designed for installations where helm space is limited while still allowing useful split-screen chart, radar and sonar layouts. The interface is based on Furuno’s TZtouchXL operating concept, including edge-swipe menus and direct touch access to commonly used functions.

TZ MAPS: More Than Basic Chart Plotting
TZ MAPS is a major reason to consider TZMAP9. Instead of treating the chart as a static background, the system lets the operator build a navigation view using the data most useful for the trip: traditional vector or raster information, satellite imagery, bathymetry and depth-colour shading. In supported areas, detailed bathymetric data can be overlaid on navigation information to make bottom contours easier to interpret for fishing, anchoring and route planning. Furuno’s BathyVision presentation is designed to show very fine contour intervals where the underlying data supports them, giving anglers substantially more bottom-shape information than a conventional contour chart.
With supported TZ MAPS chart purchases, the system can unlock AI-assisted routing that considers charted depths, known navigational obstacles and the vessel’s entered draft when proposing a route. That does not replace the skipper’s responsibility to verify depths, restrictions, tides and real-world conditions, but it can substantially reduce the work involved in creating an initial route. A TimeZero account can also be used to back up and retrieve user data, while supported chart purchases can integrate with the TZ iBoat mobile ecosystem for planning away from the helm.
Navigation, GNSS and User Data
The internal navigation receiver uses 72 GNSS channels plus a WAAS/SBAS channel and updates position at up to 10 Hz. Furuno specifies approximately 100 seconds for a cold start and nominal accuracy figures of about 10 m with GPS alone, 7 m with MSAS and 3 m with WAAS under specified conditions. The chartplotter can store up to 30,000 user points, 100,000 track points and 200 planned routes with as many as 500 points per route, giving serious cruisers and anglers plenty of room for marks, fishing spots and long passage plans.
TruEcho CHIRP and Conventional Fish Finding
TZMAP9 includes a single-channel sounder that can operate with conventional 50/200 kHz transducers or a compatible single-band CHIRP transducer. Output depends on the transducer and installation, with support for 300 W, 600 W and 1 kW classes; some traditional 1 kW Furuno transducers require the appropriate matching box. This flexibility lets the buyer choose a transducer around hull material, installation style, target species, water depth and desired beam characteristics instead of being locked into one bundled sensor.
Beyond the basic echo display, compatible installations can use Furuno functions such as TruEcho CHIRP, ACCU-FISH target sizing, Bottom Discrimination, automatic gain modes for fishing or cruising, A-Scope, marker zoom, bottom zoom and bottom lock. ACCU-FISH and Bottom Discrimination depend on using a compatible transducer and operating within their supported conditions. These features are useful because they help distinguish fish targets, interpret bottom composition and keep the part of the water column that matters most in view.
CHIRP Side-Scan for Structure Search
A separate 12-pin Side-Scan port supports Furuno 230 kHz- and 455 kHz-class CHIRP Side-Scan transducers in transom-mount, single thru-hull or paired thru-hull configurations. Side-Scan looks outward to port and starboard instead of only beneath the hull, making it particularly useful for locating reefs, rocks, wreck edges, bait-holding structure and isolated fish away from the boat’s track. Furuno specifies display range up to 750 ft to each side and provides multiple high-contrast colour presentations so the operator can choose the palette that best reveals structure in current conditions.
Radar and Situational Awareness
Although TZMAP9 is described as a stand-alone, non-networkable MFD, it is radar capable with supported Furuno DRS dome sensors. The distinction is important: non-networkable does not mean the display has no Ethernet or radar connection; it means TZMAP is not intended to become a synchronized multi-MFD NavNet display network that shares all navigation resources across multiple screens. Its LAN connection is used for supported peripheral integration such as compatible radar. If the boat will eventually have multiple MFDs, shared sonar sources, extensive IP video or a larger distributed electronics architecture, TZtouchE or TZtouchXL is the more appropriate platform from the start.
Radar capability depends on the sensor fitted. With compatible NXT Doppler radar, features can include Furuno Target Analyzer and rapid target acquisition/tracking functions; supported radar models can also provide specialized modes for weather or bird finding. The practical value is that a buyer can start with chartplotter/sonar functionality and add a compatible radar when the cruising or fishing mission requires it.
Weather, Planning and Connected Features
Current TZMAP software supports Furuno’s TZ Weather environment. Free forecast data is based on NOAA’s Global Forecast System, while additional higher-resolution weather products may require an optional premium service. Weather layers and forecasts on the same display used for route planning can make it easier to evaluate wind, pressure, precipitation and changing conditions before committing to a passage. Features and internet-dependent services require an appropriate connection and may vary by region.
Interfaces, Sensors and Installation
TZMAP9 includes NMEA 2000 for compatible vessel sensors and instruments, a 100BASE-TX LAN port, USB for user-data import/export, one serial NMEA 0183 output, a microSDXC slot, a 10-pin CHIRP/CW transducer connection and a 12-pin Side-Scan transducer connection. NMEA 2000 makes it possible to bring supported heading, AIS, engine, depth, wind, autopilot and other vessel data into the display. An external heading source is strongly recommended when the installation will use radar overlay or heading-dependent navigation functions.
The TZMAP9 is supplied with a tabletop bracket; Furuno specifies rear-side mounting for flush installations. The display is rated IPX6 and for operation from approximately -15°C to +55°C. It accepts 12–24 VDC. Radar sensor, fish-finder transducer, Side-Scan transducer, NMEA 2000 backbone and other external sensors are selected separately, so buyers should plan the complete system before installation rather than treating the MFD alone as the entire electronics package.
Who Should Choose TZMAP9?
TZMAP9 is best for an owner who wants one powerful primary display and values Furuno radar, sonar and TZ MAPS capabilities more than multi-display expansion. If the helm is likely to grow into two or more synchronized MFDs or share network sonar/video resources, the networkable TZtouchE family is a better long-term foundation. Within TZMAP, the choice between TZMAP9 and TZMAP13 is primarily about helm space and how much screen area is desired for split chart/radar/sonar views.
